In August, we presented the rare Girl Scouts of the USA Medal of Honor to Gold Award Girl Scout Angela King for her courage and action during a class trip to Washington, D.C.
When her classmate experienced a choking incident in the airport, Angela initiated the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge the food from the girl’s throat, successfully saving her life. Having learned first aid skills in school and through hands-on trainings offered in Girl Scouts, Angela was the first person to take action that day while fellow students and adults stood by.
The prestigious Medal of Honor is given to Girl Scouts who save a life or attempt to do so without risk to the Girl Scout's own life. Angela is one of only fifteen Girl Scouts nationwide to be awarded this honor so far in 2024 and the fourth from San Diego and Imperial counties in the last decade.

The sold-out 2024 Volunteer Conference on Saturday, Aug. 24 brought more than 500 adults to our Balboa Campus for a dynamic day of engagement and fun. Attendees learned new skills during enrichment sessions, networked with peers, previewed events and programs, and left inspired for the upcoming new membership year. Thank you to our volunteers, 50+ community partners and sponsors, GSSD staff, and everyone who made this incredible day possible. Special thanks to the 2024 Volunteer Conference sponsors: California Coast Credit Union, Mission Fed Credit Union, Rogers Behavioral Health, and San Diego Wave FC. Check out photos from the day on our Flickr page.
The annual Volunteer Celebration returns to the Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 5-7 p.m. We look forward to celebrating all Girl Scout volunteers who are building the next generation of leaders. More than 40 stellar volunteers and partners will also be recognized with special awards, including the highest award for volunteers—the Thanks Badge—which highlights adult members whose service has benefited the national Girl Scout Movement.
Join us and spend the evening enjoying light snacks and refreshments while mingling with Girl Scout friends. After the program, all guests are invited to stay and enjoy the museum until 8 p.m. Learn more and register today at sdgirlscouts.org/volunteercelebration.
In 2020, Girl Scout Troop 4242 earned the Silver Award by completing a project in partnership with ElderHelp of San Diego. They gathered "secrets to life’s happiness” from ElderHelp recipients and shared them with the community to inspire compassion and understanding. These “secrets” collectively represented more than 1,200 years of wisdom and contained messages like: “see the beauty in everybody,” “be a voice for those who cannot speak,” and “never compare yourself to others.”
Now, as these Girl Scouts have graduated high school and are transitioning to their next chapters in life, they chose to donate a portion of their remaining troop funds to ElderHelp as a gesture of gratitude for the partnership. Thank you, troop 4242, for your commitment to the Girl Scout mission of making the world a better place!
Today is San Diego Gives, a campaign that brings San Diegans together to make a difference in the community and give back to local nonprofits, like Girl Scouts San Diego.
