Dear Girl Scouts San Diego Community,
In today’s school systems, opportunities for artistic self-expression are becoming more and more limited. When outlets to explore creativity are taken away, children struggle to develop a healthy understanding of who they are and how to navigate the world around them.
Girl Scouts San Diego recognizes the transformative power of creativity. At Camp Winacka in Julian, the beloved Arts and Crafts building (pictured left) has served Girl Scouts since the 1980s. Here, girls discover their artistic spark through projects like collaborative murals, rock painting, pottery, and more. Sadly, the building is in disrepair.
For me, art has been a lifeline—a powerful outlet to express myself and build my identity. Growing up, I moved frequently, but Girl Scouts was my constant source of community and belonging. And at Girl Scout Camp, I could dive into my passion for art while creating lifelong friendships. Art gave me the courage to step outside my comfort zone and shaped the leader I am today.
For my Girl Scout Gold Award project, I focused on reinstating art programs in grade schools, which felt vital to me. Watching fourth graders fearlessly color outside the lines and connect with each other reminded me of art’s true magic: there are no rights or wrongs, just freedom.
With your help, we will rebuild the Arts and Crafts building at Camp Winacka and continue to empower girls to be bold leaders who embrace their true colors.
Together, we can ensure that the next generation of girls thrives creatively and emotionally. Donate today at sdgirlscouts.org/supportarts.
