Girl Scout Annika’s Journey Through the GSSD Hiking and Backpacking Program

Girl Scout Annika’s Journey Through the GSSD Hiking and Backpacking Program

Growing up, I longed to find a community where I could deepen my love for the outdoors and feel a sense of belonging. That’s when I found the Girl Scouts San Diego (GSSD) Backpacking Program, which has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.

I started with the Wilderness Hiking Course, where I learned about safety, gear, Leave No Trace principles, and independence. Once I completed that course, I moved to Basic Backpacking, gaining skills in clothing selection, trip planning, and decision-making on the trail during overnight trips. With both courses under my belt, I progressed to the program’s Advanced Trips, where I took on a more active role in planning and decision-making. So far, I have completed three Advanced Trips, all in the backcountry of the Eastern Sierras. These trips have been incredible, fostering both friendships and outdoor skills among like-minded Girl Scouts and adults as we take in the breathtaking natural beauty.

One of my favorite memories was the Pioneer Basin trip this past summer. It was an 8-day adventure in the Eastern Sierras, just south of Mammoth. Over the course of the trip, we saw lakes, basins, rivers, and gorgeous mountains. I grew close to the other Girl Scouts on the trip, Allie and Amelia, even though we’re all from different troops and service units. We spent our days laughing and chatting along the trail, forging friendships that I know wouldn’t have happened without this program. With Girl Scouts joining from all over San Diego County, the backpacking program is an amazing way to meet new people and create lasting connections.

The program has helped me grow so much. From planning trips to working with others, I have learned so much from the experienced adults and volunteers. I have also served as a Youth Leader for the program in 2023 and 2024. In this role, I taught Girl Scouts through the Wilderness Hiking and Basic Backpacking courses, guiding them as a mentor on their outings. This leadership role has been such a rewarding experience and allowed me to build confidence and share my passion for the outdoors with others.

To any Girl Scout interested in joining—do it! Starting in 6th grade, you can take the Wilderness Hiking Course, and by 7th grade, you can enroll in Basic Backpacking after completing the hiking course. Advanced Trips are open to Girl Scouts who have finished both courses and have First Aid/CPR certification. The GSSD Backpacking Program has been an incredible community for me. I am forever grateful for the friendships and memories I have made along the way. As I head off to college, I will carry with me the resilience, independence, and trip planning skills I have learned, confident that I can navigate the outdoors—and life—on my own.
