Summer Resident Camps

At our summer resident (overnight) camps, girls get a taste of independence in a safe and fun environment. Campers enjoy the best parts of being a kid: learning and playing in groups where everyone belongs, trying new and different activities, and exploring hands-on nature experiences. Camp sessions are broken into themes to suit every interest. Songs, skits, campfires, laughter, and friendship are all part of each girl's summer camp experience.

Sign up for summer fun starting Monday, Feb. 3! Browse Girl Scouts San Diego’s 2020 summer camp offerings in our new Camp Brochure (folleto en espanol también próximamente).

2020 Parent Handbook: Print this document. This planning guide contains detailed information about camp and will help you and your camper prepare for her adventure! You and your camper are responsible for all the information in this handbook, and her success at camp depends on your preparation.

Locations and Directions

Camps Winacka and Whispering Oaks are located on the same 700-acre oak woodland site near the mountain town of Julian, 60 miles east of San Diego. Bus transportation is available (for a fee) from Mission Valley in San Diego and the Escondido Program Center in Kit Carson Park.

Camp Winacka

At this traditional camp, living units are tucked in the trees surrounding an open meadow. Girls sleep in modern cabins with cots, open-air cabins with built-in bunks, or cots on a deck under the stars. All accommodations have modern bathrooms with showers, flush toilets and luggage storage areas. Activities mainly occur around the dining hall, swimming pool, lake, and environmental center.

Camp Whispering Oaks

Camp Whispering Oaks offers all the comforts of modern cabins in the beautiful outdoors. Each living unit includes three modern cabins with bunk beds and a nearby program shelter with modern bathroom facilities. Paved, lighted pathways connecting living and activity areas wind through native manzanita, oak and pine. The sports field and playground are popular destinations for campers.

Directions: For Escondido and Mission Valley bus stops, see the 2020 Parent Handbook. For private transportation, see the Camps Whispering Oaks and Winacka map.

Communication with Campers

Camp Blog: Families can use Bunk1 to stay in touch with campers. Register for free access to our daily newsletter and photo updates. Purchase credits to send emails and order prints of camp photos. Girl Scouts receives a portion of proceeds from your order. To get started:

  1. Choose your daughter's camp: Winacka or Whispering Oaks.
  2. Click "Register Now" and fill out the basic information.
  3. Enter the camp-specific security code provided in your confirmation e-mail.

If your daughter is attending both camp locations, you will need to set up an account for each one.

Mail: Mail is delivered once per day, usually after lunch. Cheerful letters or notes of encouragement are best! For more information about how to send your camper letters, please reference the Communications with Campers section of the Parent Handbook.

Resident Camp Activities

Each group of campers and staff plans its own activities based on the girls' interests. Additional activities are based on the camp session's theme. Campers can expect to spend about half their time at camp doing activities related to their theme, and about half their time enjoying general camp activities, such as arts and crafts, hiking, archery, nature activities, swimming, challenge course, sleep-outs and cookouts. Choose a theme with your camper by looking for activities she already loves, or has always wanted to try!

Nationally Accredited

All Girl Scouts San Diego camps are accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). This national organization requires camp managers to meet rigorous standards in every facet of operation. Girl Scouts San Diego is proud to meet these important criteria. Find out more at the ACA site for parents.
