Badges and Journeys

Badges

Have you always wanted to…

  • Make your own movie?
  • Build a robot?
  • Sleep under the stars?
  • Write a book of short stories?
  • Run a business?

Great news! As a Girl Scout, you can learn to do all these things and more and earn Girl Scout badges as you go. Girl Scout badges are a great way for you to explore your interests, learn new skills, and show the world—and yourself—what you've accomplished.

When Girl Scouts earn badges, they learn to make healthy choices and develop strong relationships with their family, peers, and the community. They have opportunities to discover career options and lifelong passions.

Earning badges helps Girl Scouts build confidence as they try new things and increase resilience as they work through obstacles. Girl Scouts also learn to take the lead in their own lives and in their communities. Simply put: badges help girls grow!

Is it badge or patch? What’s the difference?

Badges are earned by completing GSUSA-created curriculum which teaches proficiency in over 35 different categories in the areas of STEM, outdoors, life skills, and entrepreneurship. Badges are displayed on the front of the uniform.

Patches represent participation in council-created patch programs, community partner events, the fall product and cookie programs, and fun experiences like ice skating or volunteering at the food bank. There’s a patch for just about everything (#TheresAPatchForThat) which girls proudly display on the back of their uniforms.

Journeys

If you're looking for an even deeper experience, take a Journey! You'll explore new things, connect with friends and your community, and make a difference in the world.

Team up with friends to:

  • Identify a problem you want to do something about.
  • Come up with a creative solution that will make a difference.
  • Create a team plan to make that solution a reality.
  • Put your plan into action.
  • Talk about what you've learned and what you'll do next.

Every Girl Scout program level has several Journey series to choose from, each including a sustainable Take Action project and all the exploration, discovery, and adventure to power a lifetime of leadership and success!

When girls complete badges and Journeys, they learn about:

  • Civic Engagement
  • Healthy Relationships
  • Financial Literacy
  • Community Service
  • ...and, so much more!
