Food Justice for All

Girl Scouts San Diego CEO Carol Dedrich was joined by Jen Nation, Executive Director of Olivewood Gardens & Learning Center and Jeni Barajas, Environmental Education Specialist at Olivewood Gardens & Learning Center (and Girl Scout Volunteer) for a compelling conversation, Food Justice for All. Listen to the audio for valuable information on how food insecurities and food injustice affect communities in San Diego. Learn what various organizations are doing to help build a healthy environment by providing educational resources. Many opportunities are available for Girl Scouts to partner with community organizations such as Olivewood Gardens & Learning Center to earn badges and patches, or create a higher award project. Gold Award Girl Scout Lauren L. talked about her Gold Award project, a collaboration with All About the Kids Foundation to provide nutritional food to underserved children in San Diego.

Navigating Life After the Pandemic
Tuesday, May 18, 5-6 p.m.

May is National Mental Health Awareness month. To promote the importance of mental health, Girl Scouts San Diego hosted a Compelling Conversation with CEO Carol Dedrich, Laura Vleugels, MD, and Kelley Grimes, MSW. Dr. Vleugels and Ms. Grimes offered children and adults ways to deal with the various emotions experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Panelists spoke of the importance of exercise, proper nutrition, sleep, finding ways to stay connected to others, practicing mindfulness, and finding and maintaining routine and structure. “Cooling off the brain” by unplugging, becoming adventurous, playing, learning something new, journaling, and laughing are also beneficial to physical and emotional well-being.

Dr. Laura Vleugels serves as Supervising Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist for the County of San Diego. Kelley Grimes, founder of Cultivating Peace and Joy (www.Cultivating Peace and Joy.com), is a counselor, public speaker, and best-selling author of “The Art of Self Nurturing-A Field Guide to Living with more Peace Joy & Meaning”. In honor of National Girl Scouts Week, Girl Scouts San Diego CEO Carol Dedrich was joined by GSUSA Board President Karen P. Layng and Director and Chair of the Philanthropy Committee Sue Major for an insider's look into our national movement. Karen is a devoted Girl Scout alum, lifetime member, and adult volunteer, serving as her Gold Award daughter’s troop leader for 13 years. She has been awarded the Thanks Badge and Thanks Badge II. Karen is also the former board chair of Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana. Sue is a lifetime member and the second of three generations of Girl Scouts. Sue’s mother was a lifelong Girl Scout and Sue’s troop leader. Sue was her daughter’s troop cookie mom and supported her daughter as she earned her Silver Award. In honor of Black History Month, Girl Scouts San Diego CEO Carol Dedrich was joined by a multi-generational family in a conversation on how sharing their family history through story telling has enriched their family connections. These women, across three generations, explained how through telling of stories, family reunions, and virtual meetings (during the pandemic) they have created their family’s legacy for future generations. Girl Scouts San Diego CEO Carol Dedrich was joined by Divya Kakaiya, Ph.D. and Roshni Kakaiya, D.O. for a Compelling Conversation on ways to stay healthy and connected with friends and family during the pandemic. Drs. Kakaiya shared references and resources (Parenting Manifesto, Strengthen Your Inner Shield) on the importance of exercise, sleep, and maintaining a healthy diet. Girl Scouts of all ages joined Girl Scouts San Diego CEO Carol Dedrich for a conversation with The Honorable M. Margaret McKeown, who sits on the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, as they discussed the history of the Nineteenth Amendment. This local expert recently authored an article on the topic. Listen to the recording.
