Congratulations to Tange and Tom Gavin

2017 Promise Circle Award recipients

During our recent Promise Circle and Juliette Gordon Low Society recognition celebration at the home of Nancy and Alan Spector, we presented longtime Girl Scout friends Tange and Tom Gavin with the 2017 Promise Circle Award.

Each year, we pay tribute to an individual or couple that leads the way in supporting Girl Scouts. Our Promise Circle honorees have a lasting impact on Girl Scouts San Diego.

Their support is instrumental to furthering our mission, providing a place where girls thrive. Research proves that Girl Scouts’ single-sex, girl-centered environment is key to creating that setting. Girls develop a strong sense of self, step outside their comfort zones, and build the bravery and resilience that comes from taking risks, learning from their mistakes and trying again. Compared to their non-Girl Scout peers, Girl Scouts earn better grades and have higher academic and career aspirations. They are also more likely to enter professions in business, law or STEM fields, where women are traditionally underrepresented.

Tange has fond memories of being a Girl Scout in east county — earning badges, canoeing, and camping on the beach with her troop. Her Girl Scouting was a family affair, with her mom leading the troop, and her dad transporting cookies all over the city for Tange, who reigned as Fletcher Hills’ top cookie seller for three consecutive years.

Today, Tange personifies the ideals of the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Since she became a Girl Scout volunteer in 2006, Tange has shared her professional skills with our audit committee. She has also been active on committees for the 100th anniversary and conferences.

Together with Tom, Tange volunteers for our Urban Campout “fun fundraiser for grown-ups." For 11 years, the creative duo has sawed, hammered, painted and glued up a storm to create imaginative décor. In addition, they donate Urban Campout supplies, auction items and party favors.

The Gavins also joined the Juliette Gordon Low Society, furthering their support by including Girl Scouts San Diego in their estate plan.
