Tina Mickelson on Golf for Girls

There are so many wonderful things about the game of golf but the one aspect I enjoy the most is the time I get to spend with my family. I grew up with two brothers and we didn't always have the same interests. I was into gymnastics and they were into baseball. But the one thing we did have in common was our love for golf. It meant a lot to me (even as a teenager) to be able to spend time with both of my brothers doing something we both enjoyed. Instead of competing against each other we would compete against the golf course by trying to shoot our best score ever. Because of this, we never got into arguments or disagreements while playing. We just had fun with each other and rooted each other on.
One of my fondest memories growing up is when we would spend our summers at Presidio Hills Golf Course. We would play golf all day long. When we got done with each round we would go into the golf shop and the golf professional would let us pick out a candy bar and it would be his treat. So we would see how fast we could play so we could get back to the golf shop for another treat. That was the first time I realized you don't have to be competitive, or even good, to enjoy the game of golf!
I also really loved playing with my dad, especially when my mom would come ride along in the cart. He taught me so much while on the golf course together, and most of it didn't even have anything to do with golf!
With Father's Day right around the corner, a great gift idea is a round of golf together as a family. There is nothing parents love more than spending time with their kids and golf is a game everyone can enjoy!

Each month, I will write an article that discusses the benefits of golf, especially benefits that relate to young women. The purpose of the articles is to help inspire girls to develop their own passion for the game so they might experience the many rewards the game has to offer.
I have been playing golf since the age of two and teaching golf since 1991. Whether I was playing golf, or teaching golf, the game has provided me with a lifetime full of blessings and opportunities and has also provided me with an amazing career. I have had the opportunity to write books, appear on television on the Golf Channel and CBS, and have developed many wonderful friendships through the game of golf.
Golf is also a wonderful bonding experience for my family. My brother Phil plays the game professionally at the highest level, and my brother Tim is the golf coach at the University of San Diego. The game has truly given me so much which is why I am excited to share my experiences with the Girl Scouts of San Diego through a series of articles.
In the articles, I will discuss a number of topics like how golf can create a better college experience and in some instances, it can actually help pay for college. I will also discuss the social benefits of golf and the wonderful impact on relationships.
Finally, I will discuss ways for girls or young women to learn and get more involved in the game, such as
Scratch Junior Golf... Accelerated, the premier youth golf training center located right here in San Diego County. I do hope you find the articles informative and they help bring more young women to the sport.
