LA MESA, CA, August 25, 2009, History comes alive at student's walking tour of La Mesa
Young women in flapper costumes and men in dapper attire strolling the streets of La Mesa in mid-August offer visitors a walk back through time to the city's heyday as a silent movie filmmaking Mecca and a turn-of-the-century boom town. The historical tours were all part of a project prepared by Karissa Valencia, a Helix Charter High Graduate and incoming freshman at the University of San Diego, to earn her Gold Award in Girl Scouts.

"Go climb a tree" has new meaning for Girl Scouts in Balboa Park. The San Diego-Imperial County chapter has completed a four-story new "tree house" for its Scouts, one of the last pieces of a $5.5 million building campaign to spruce up the 11-acre campground tucked away on the park's northern edge. The 39-foot-tall climbing structure boasts two swaying bridges, a rope climb, a cargo net ladder, other chutes and ladders and 1,900 square feet of decks.
