OUTREACH

Girl Scout Outreach empowers girls in underserved areas with the self-confidence to make positive health, education and career decisions. Through our after-school and community center programs, girls develop skills in violence prevention, conflict resolution, communication and leadership as well as in math, science and technology.

A diverse, bilingual team of program leaders serve as mentors in areas where volunteer leadership has not been developed. They deliver educational, age-appropriate programs in collaboration with local schools and community groups and look for dedicated volunteers to take over as troop leaders.

Girl Scout Outreach programs complement existing school curriculum. They meet the needs of the communities and the girls in those communities. Content is also specifically designed to help girls develop and maintain healthy and productive lifestyles. Projects and activities are based on seven focus areas: Healthy Mind Healthy Body, Human Relations, Life Skills, Arts and Humanities, The Outdoor Experience, Leadership Development and Community Service.

Facts about Girl Scout Outreach

Girl Scout Outreach serves approximately 7,000 girls a year at 123 schools and community outreach programs, all in low- or moderate-income neighborhoods.
Community facilities include the Girls Rehabilitation Facility (a teen detention center), the San Diego Center for Children, Casa de Amparo, the Boys and Girls Clubs, the YMCA, YWCA and Polinsky Center.
One hundred Outreach girls participate in the yearly Mountain Adventure camping weekend. They all come from limited-income families and most experience their first hike, their first sleepover and their first campfire.
Council Campership and Opportunity funds pay for girls' camps and registration fees.
