Use Common Cents: Explore Finances with Your Troop
With so much discussion about the failing economy, people losing jobs, and shrinking family finances, the girls in your troop may be very sensitive about having enough money to do activities. Some families may feel they can't afford to keep their girls involved in everything, and may be forced to make hard decisions about where and when to cut the expenses.
Now, more than ever, wisdom and planning are required, even at the youngest levels of Girl Scouts. Troop treasuries may be more important than ever before. How leaders and their girls manage the treasury could affect whether some girls remain involved. It's time to use some "common cents." Leaders can use awareness of money matters to spark discussions with their girls. Let girls express their concerns, and listen closely for ideas and possible solutions. Praise their ingenuity in saving money and finding thrifty alternatives to more expensive activities. Help them make the best use of their money.
Practicing these life skills will help your girls feel more secure and ease their financial fears. Historically, children who become successful money-managers in such a difficult economy grow into adults with healthy financial practices. Start the discussion now, and watch your investment pay dividends tomorrow.
DQ + Girl Scouts = Entrepreneur info, tours, Blizzards
Last year, Girl Scouts Thin Mint Cookie Blizzard became one of the most popular Dairy Queen Blizzards of all time. This year, Girl Scouts and Dairy Queen have developed an entrepreneurship insight program and tour option to address aspects of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
Check a council resource center for two worksheets - or click here for the Restaurant Success Wheel and Money Wise - that troops can use to compare their Girl Scout Cookie Program participation with DQ business operations. The worksheets help girls learn about entrepreneurship, restaurant operations, marketing and customer service.
Some DQ franchises will provide an insider's view of their operations. Call individual stores at least a week in advance to ask if they're participating during the week of July 20-26. To prepare, review activity sheets and encourage girls to make a list of questions prior to the tour.
The Tagalongs Peanut Butter Patties Blizzard will be available in July; in August customers can purchase the Thin Mint Cookie Blizzard. A single coupon may be used for an entire group during an event. Coupons are intended for the sole use of Girl Scout members (individually or as a group), volunteers, staff and board members; individual store operators/managers decide whether to accept coupons.
