Girl Scouts Explore Their World Through "destinations"
Summer Girl Scout "destinations" are in full swing! A destination is any experience, regardless of distance or length of time, which provides a girl age 11-17 with an opportunity to expand her personal horizons beyond her everyday environment. Events range from two days to 10 weeks, occur throughout the year, and vary from small groups of individuals to hundreds of girls.
Girl Scout destinations focus on skill-based experiences that bring girls together from around the world; service opportunities, networking and mentoring; using technology to connect girls to events and each other; regional events; internship and apprenticeship programs and individual national leadership opportunities. All events are chaperoned by adults and sponsored by Girl Scout councils across the country.
Girl Scouts, San Diego Imperial-Council is sponsoring three Girl Scout destinations this summer.
Amazon Adventure: Peru allows girls to experience the heart
of the Amazon Rainforest. Girls will discover the diversity of the Amazon as they learn about pink river dolphins, howler monkeys, toucans and three-toed sloths. While hiking through the forest and boating along the Amazon River, they'll conduct field studies, work on a service project and experience the amazing cultures of the Amazon.
London: Discover your potential 2009 gives girls the opportunity to explore London! Participants will discuss environmental awareness and what they can do to make a difference, do a service project benefiting the local community while learning new skills and having fun. And they'll
explore the unique culture of the United Kingdom through its traditions, history, people, the BBC, Henry VIII, the Beatles, museums, theater and more.
G.E.M.M.: Girls Empowered to Make Movies, girls
experience the art of filmmaking in an atmosphere of
total immersion. Girls will enjoy a behind-the-scenes
tour of a major Hollywood motion picture studio along
with some other great surprises! Back in San Diego,
they'll work directly with professional filmmakers to
hone their skills in writing, directing, editing, acting,
cinematography, and production. Everyone will get the opportunity to fulfill each of the basic crew positions as well as write, direct, and edit a short film of up to five minutes.
Interested girls can check the Girl Scout destinations website at www.studio2b.org/escape/destinations/ for trip availability and information. If you're interested in applying for Girl Scout destinations in 2010, plan to attend our council's information expo on Thursday, September 24, at the Balboa Program Center, where you can learn more and interact with
girls who have participated in trips across the country and around the world.
