San Diego nonprofits present inside look into documentary's message
Outside the Lens, the Junior League of San Diego and Girl Scouts San Diego will host a film screening and panel discussion about the documentary Miss Representation on Friday, Feb. 10, 6-9 p.m. The event, designed to help stop the exploitation of women in the mass media, will take place at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, 700 Prospect Street in La Jolla.
Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Miss Representation premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and aired on the Oprah Winfrey Network in October. The film explores how the media's misrepresentation of women has led to an underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence in America. It also addresses how violent and/or sexual depictions of females in the media affect young women. The documentary interweaves interviews with teenage girls with commentary by prominent leaders and media personalities, including Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Lisa Ling, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rosario Dawson, Dr. Jean Kilbourne, Gloria Steinem, and Dr. Caroline Heldman. For more information and a film trailer, visit www.missrepresentation.org.
Local leaders, professional media artists and students will lead a panel discussion following the film screening.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Event proceeds benefit Outside the Lens media literacy programming.
