Girls and their families participated in the Girl Scouts' "Uniquely Me! The way to be..." session at Imperial's Veterans Memorial Hall on Saturday. Girls in fourth through sixth grades, as well as their mothers, attended Saturday's event to learn about healthy eating, bullying, anger management and communicating with each other.

Jo Dee Catlin Jacob spent most of her career in the Navy as a woman alone in a sea of men. In nearly every station she went to, she was the first or only woman. But since retiring from her final post eight years ago as commanding officer of the U.S. Naval station in Guam, she has been surrounded by women and girls. As chief executive officer for the Girl Scouts, San Diego-Imperial Council, one of the largest councils in the nation, Jacob has more than 30,000 girls and nearly 13,000 volunteers under her command.

The historical tours were all part of a project prepared by Karissa Valencia, a Helix Charter High Graduate and incoming freshman at the University of San Diego, to earn her Gold Award in Girl Scouts.

Girl Scouts from all over the San Diego area toured aviation facilities on Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI) while participating in a shadow program known as "In her Shoes." The scouts toured NASNI's air traffic control tower, Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 30 and Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 3. Participants say the visit gave them a wide-eyed view of naval aviation and the possibilities within.

"Go climb a tree" has new meaning for Girl Scouts in Balboa Park. The San Diego-Imperial County chapter has completed a four-story new "tree house" for its Scouts, one of the last pieces of a $5.5 million building campaign to spruce up the 11-acre campground tucked away on the park's northern edge. The 39-foot-tall climbing structure boasts two swaying bridges, a rope climb, a cargo net ladder, other chutes and ladders and 1,900 square feet of decks.
