Make the world a better place through theatre! During this collaboration between Girl Scouts San Diego and The La Jolla Playhouse, 9th-12th grade girls spend three weeks practicing improv games, learning theatre exercises, and developing leadership skills with teaching artists from the Playhouse.
This year, 12 high-school and middle-school girls evaluated and explored the intersection of conflict, peace, and communication. With guidance from a dynamic group of teaching artists, participants explored what it means to find and use our voices for positive change. Each week, the group took field trips to the Playhouse to work with students in the Young Performers’ Workshop. They considered the everyday choices they make and connected with peers about how to make greater social change through theatre.
The camp culminated in a special showcase called Peace Begins with Me, an hour-long play written and produced by the girls themselves. The production included poetry, songs, and "play back theatre" with reenactments of girls' and audience members' life experiences of conflict and joy.
Empowerment Theatre is funded through a generous grant from the Favrot Family, which covered all the costs associated with participating in the program.
