San Diego Chinese Historical Museum

San Diego Chinese Historical Museum - In 1986, the San Diego Chinese Historical Society formed in order to preserve and share Chinese and Chinese American history and culture. In the 1990s, when a historic mission building, the former church and school of the local Chinese community was slated for demolition, the Historical Society rallied to save it and the City approved plans to relocate the building to the heart of old Chinatown at the corner of J Street and Third Avenue. In 1996, after the building’s relocation and renovation, the SDCHM was born.

From its humble beginnings, SDCHM has grown to encompass 3 downtown facilities and a Chinese-style garden. Over the past twenty years, the museum has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors, collected thousands of ethnographic artifacts, and hosted hundreds of educational programs and exhibitions. Today, SDCHM remains a platform for celebrating multiculturalism, enriching the community, and showcasing San Diego as an international cultural tourist destination.

SDCHM offers a variety of programs for Girl Scouts such as badge programs, private tours, field trips and more in the heart of downtown San Diego.

With close to 3,000 bears gifted in over 38 countries, RARE Science is bridging the divide in the rare disease community by creating awareness and support!

An estimated 250 Million kids have a rare disease.  30% of these children will die before their 5th birthday  and 35% will pass before their first birthday. Treatments are difficult to develop for rare diseases because of the scarcity of patients identified, the lack of data needed to better understand, and the cost it takes to find treatments for these diseases. RARE Science is tackling all three of these challenges using a unique methodology to accelerate and decrease time to identify medicines for rare diseases affecting kids.

RARE Bear Program
Our RARE Bear Program offers a unique opportunity for the community to become engaged in supporting children and their families who are trying to find help and treatment. Creating a RARE Bear for a rare child is a rewarding and selfless act that in turn brings joy and hope to others. Join the RARE Bear Army TODAY!

Think Dignity

Think Dignity is a nonprofit that inspires, empowers and organizes the San Diego community to advance basic dignity for those living on the streets. Think Dignity was founded by a group of professional women who were concerned about an important issue that affected our community: homelessness. They understood that their unhoused neighbors were human beings who deserved dignity and respect, too. These women knew, as Girl Scouts everywhere know, that together with their community, they could make a difference.

Join the movement and the Think Dignity community. From simple projects such as sewing towels into washcloths to a drive to collect and distribute undergarments, every Girl Scout can contribute to the dignity of our neighbors, learn leadership skills and become empowered to work as a group to make our community a better place for everyone!

Project Washcloth
Sewing project
: A kind donor has given us 60 towels, each of which are to be cut & hemmed into six washcloths. A troop may commit to as many towels as they choose, which may be picked up and returned in approximately one month. We provide the towel and instructions, the troop provides the needle, sewing machine and thread!

Washcloth and towel drive: We are in need of new and slightly used towels and washcloths (to be later cut and sewn into washcloths). Place into a labelled box and drop off at our location.

Project Drive for Undergarments
Clean out those drawers and closets and donate those undergarments! Think Dignity distributes foundation garments of all sizes to our unhoused female neighbors. This project collects brand new panties and new or gently used bras in great condition, so ask your family and friends! These donated bras and panties are going to a very worthy cause!

True Boundaries

At the heart of every True Boundaries personal protection seminar is the message that girls can strike a balance between being “considerate and caring” while also being “courageous and strong.” Our Ambassador, Danielle Martin, shares that even as a Black Belt and safety expert, she never really knew how to protect herself until she learned to do so from the inside out. An inspirational and positive experience that emphasizes the power of friendship, confidence, honing and owning intuition, and the ultimate importance of defining and abiding by your own True Boundaries. Basic safety issues and dangers are discussed, and simple self-defense methods are modeled and practiced. Seminars are created in conjunction with a developmental psychologist and then personalized with each troop leader in order to meet the unique needs of the girls you love!
