Outdoor Training - Let's Camp!
 
Ready for outdoor adventure?

Monday, March 15 -- 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm
 
This is the first course in the outdoor training series. This course prepares leaders to assist girls with girl planning, indoor overnights, outdoor progression, trip planning, safety and program activities. Class is 3.5 hours. Classes must be completed in order: 1) Let's Camp!, 2) Let's Cook! and 3) Let's Tent!

During this interactive presentation, Girl Scouts CEO Jo Dee Jacob will discuss how boosting levels of trust, respect and confidence; overcoming challenges; and strengthening bonds help you build a winning team.

Jo Dee will share how you can hire people who'll work together with a shared vision and commitment, help develop each person's individual gifts, increase positive informal and formal interactions among the group, instill a winning attitude throughout the organization, and build critical core competencies and understand the processes for such partnerships Early bird price ends at 5 p.m. on March 11.

Enrichment Training - CPR / First Aid

This Advanced Health and Safety Training course meets the requirements for a First Aider Level 1. Successful completion earns a two-year certificate. Course Length: 5 hours (CPR: 5:30-8:15p.m.; First Aid: 8:15-10:30 p.m.)

Let's Cook! builds on the skills and safety guidelines introduced in Let's Camp! The Let's Cook! class participants will work in patrols to learn to cook using charcoal fires and propane stoves, menu planning, environmental impact and girl planning. Participants bring personal gear and share food cost. This two-part course must be taken with the same session groups (parts 1 & 2). Prerequisite: Let's Cook (Part 1)!

Outdoor Training - Cook's Checkout

Saturday, March 20 -- 9:00 am to 2:00 pm
 
Adults (over 18) planning to use the kitchen at Whispering Oaks or Camp Winacka for a service unit encampment or other community camping event must attend this class. This is a complete course in the use of the commercial kitchen at the mountain properties, including practice with equipment and creating menus for larger groups. Class is limited to three trainees per session. Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Wilderness Hiking class is a one day experience for girls and adults to learn the foundational skills for long-term hiking and trail usage. This class is the pre-requisite for the Basic and Advanced Backpacking trips. You must complete this class and two additional day hikes for certification.

Girl Scouts get a taste of sustainable farming in this hands-on tour of a working urban farm. Girls will have the opportunity to help out on the farm, learn about composting and even enjoy the fruits (and vegetables) of their labor with a freshly picked lunch! Participants discover where food comes from, connect with others who support sustainable practices and take action by growing their own food at home. Limited to 30 girls and the Safety-Wise ratio of adults.

Discovery Day 2010

Technology Goddesses Computer Workshop
 
It's Your [Digital] Planet, Love it!

Saturday, April 24 to Sunday, April 25
 
During this exciting, hands-on workshop, girls learn practical computer skills, explore technology careers, and try digital and graphic applications.

Girl Scouts in grades 6-8 explore computer technology at an overnight workshop. They can earn a technology IP and portions of the Leadership in Action patch in the "It's Your Planet, Love It!" journey. The workshop satisfies the requirements for the Graphic Communications IP and some requirements for the Stress to Success IP and the Breathe Journey. Older girls will also lead Brownie Journey and Try-It workshops.

Note: All attendees must consent to photographic release.

Explore a world where science, art and creativity meet ... where almost anything is possible! Find out how famous women engineers changed your world. Team up with sister Girl Scouts to put their discoveries to the test in real, hands-on challenges. Find out how things work, make cool gizmos with everyday objects and take your creations home with you. Build a bottle rocket and see which team can make it fly the highest!

Age: Grades 5-8. Ideal for Girl Scout Juniors completing parts of the Bridging to Cadette Girl Scouts Award or the Making It Matter Badge. Cadettes complete Career Exploration for Build a Better Future IP.

Let's Tent! will open up the adventures of tent camping with your girls! Includes safety, rustic outdoor living skills in tents, environmental considerations and proper equipment. The experience will include campfire program, night activities, stargazing, lashing and trail signs activities. Note: This overnight course must be completed to receive a "tent certification." Prerequisite: Let's Camp & Let's Cook.

The Challenge Course at Camp Winacka and Whispering Oaks is a low element teambuilding course. Through a two day course, participants will develop the personal, educational, and technical skills needed to effectively facilitate challenge course programs. A minimum of 10 participants is required to hold this course. Facilitator must lead course at least twice a year, and must attend one half-day facilitator refresher course per year to maintain certification. Facilitators should recertify entirely every four years. Bring: clothing and gear listed in confirmation packet. Course length: Overnight.

Explore the Brownie level program materials- Journeys, Brownie Girl Scout Try-It Book and Handbook and Guide for Brownie Girl Scout Leaders. Additional topics include purposeful leadership, program outcomes, girl/adult partnership, Brownie-appropriate leadership development, the Brownie Ring, and resources for songs, games, and program activities. 3 hours. Prerequisite: New Leader Orientation.

Enrichment Training - Gold Award Project Workshop (Girls Only)

Wednesday, June 23 -- 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
 
This class is designed for girls (no adults please) that have completed the initial steps in the Girl Scout Gold Award "Go For It!" and will complete their award under those guidelines. Bring Gold project proposals to the workshop and meet with advisors and other adults who will coach you through the process of envisioning, planning and writing up your proposal.

Connect with Junior Girl Scouts as they take action!

Thursday, June 24 -- 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
 
Discussions will focus on the adult/girl partnership, planning and how to support girls in developing their leadership skills. The class will also include dialogue on purposeful leadership, program outcomes and program pathways such as badges and new 2009/2010 Bronze Awards guidelines. 3 hours. Prerequisite: New Leader Orientation

How do you keep junior high school girls in Girl Scouting? Find out how to use the current program resources to keep the girls interested and having fun. The class will focus on improving the adult/girl partnership, girl planning and how to support girls in developing their leadership skills The class will also review the new 2009/2010 Silver Award guidelines. 3 hours. Prerequisite: New Leader Orientation.
